There’s been a change to the programme!

AAGH!!   Marcus de Maria contacted us from his sick bed to say he couldn’t meet his commitment to NLP-South and be confident of the quality of his session. So we scratched our heads and wondered, who of all the talented people who come to NLP-South could we call on at such short notice?

Clean Language is a natural extension to NLP and sessions using Clean or Symbolic Modelling have always gone down well at NLP-South. Marian instantly came to mind. And she’s free - if busy right up to the last minute!  So Marian is allowing the focus of the session to emerge on the day.  That’s okay - the beauty of Clean is that it relies on each of us as ‘explorers’ to bring our own content to the session and to allow the simplicity of the process to uncover things we didn’t consciously know about ourselves. Marian will be helping us ‘Clean up’ our modelling of other people’s and our own ‘Unconscious Competence’, to discover more about how good we are at things and find ways to use this innate or learned skill more effectively.

What is Clean?

Clean Language was developed by psychotherapist David Grove. He discovered that asking about people's problems (which were often described in metaphor) and using their exact words, encouraged new insights and possibilities for change. He experimented with different questions and found that questions which 'interfered' with the client's experience the least were in fact the most effective in bringing about change.

Penny Tompkins and James Lawley spent several years studying David's methods, observing therapy sessions and studying transcripts. They developed a model of David's work, which they called Symbolic Modelling, to enable others to get similar results. This model is described in detail in their book, Metaphors in Mind and there is a wealth of related information on their web site.

Clean Language is fast becoming recognised as one of the most effective forms of coaching there is. Used alone or in tandem with other coaching processes, Clean methodologies enable the client to access a different quality of information and new routes to deep, sustainable change.
