Ask the same questions to a group of friends
How different are the answers? Who is right?
Well the answer is of course, you are all right and the reasons the answers are different is because we all have our own maps of reality, our own filters of making sense of what we see, hear, feel, smell and touch. In addition to the way we distort, delete and generalise our map, we also filter through our own beliefs, values and emotional states. If when asking the questions one of your friends believes cats are vermin and another friend absolutely adores cats, I wonder how different their maps would be and how different their emotional state would be?
Limiting Beliefs
The limiting belief filter of a person’s map of the world, at some stage may have served a purpose and it may be useful to recognise in what context the limiting belief may now not be so useful and restricting. For instance, a child may have been told to eat all the food on their plate as it is wrong to waste food, therefore the belief is now born ‘I must always eat everything on my plate’. In adulthood that belief may not be as useful, particularly if they have a weight problem, the limiting belief can be the saboteur.
Belief Change Technique.
Original Version -
(The method I demonstrated is a shorter, June adapted version of the Robert Dilts Model, which I use with Corporate Clients).
States
When a person is in a stressed state their map may not be as useful and their choices may seem limited. Therefore to be able to reduce this stress very quickly can be a great way of enriching someone’s map.
One Point Technique
One Point is a technique used in Aikido, you may have experienced this many times but did not realise it was called “one point”. When you have been doing something that you felt particularly happy and comfortable with, calm, relaxed and positive, you were keeping one point.
One point is located about two inches below the navel and halfway between your spine and navel, this is the body’s centre of balance. The most powerful motions of the body originate here and the calmest minds are concentrated here.
(Practice with friends or family)
Firstly, Scale the stress level between 1 -
Have a friend stand just to your side and ask them to incrementally push you on the shoulder to feel how moveable you are. Now stand with your feet about shoulder width apart and imagine your mind moving to 3 inches below your tummy button and an inch into the centre of your body. Hold One Point (the feeling of your consciousness in the centre of your body).
Now your friend can keep checking if you are in a more centred position by gently pushing your shoulder, it will be firmer when in One Point.
Now holding One Point, let your friend know when it is reducing, if it was 10, let them know when it is 9, 8, 7 etc down to 1.
At 1, imagine that everything went better than you imagined…Hold One Point………Now imagine a few challenges …………Imagine everything goes fantastically well…Hold One Point. Future Pace.
Thank you all for an enjoyable evening!
Best Wishes
